About Lackland Well

Lackland Well is an artist residency on a Virginia Century Farm in Farmville, VA established in 1787. The property has been in the Oertel family for over a hundred years passed down from craftsmen to craftsmen. As of now, we aim to carry on this legacy of makers and offer up space for creative community, learning and sharing new skillsets, and falling in love with your practice all over again. Musicians, writers, book binders, boat builders, come one come all!

Lackland Well is under the direction of partners Laura Oertel and Rebecca Daryl Smith.

In other news, we are currently raising funds for materials in our upcoming timber frame raising workshop this November! We're dreaming of new and improved structures to act as lodging and studio space for future residents and workshops. Donations of all sizes are welcome, to get started visit our contact page.

Spring is coming slowly but surely. This past winter we got more snow than anticipated, mapped out walking trails, rested maybe too much, and made our hands busy inside where it's warm. January and February acted as a much needed off-season. Here are some photos from our time in the snow and visits from sweet friends.
